Hi! Welcome to my website . . . . . . .
My name is Sondra Karipides and I love to make art.  My first real love was making pottery.  I love the way the clay squishes and spins under my hands on the wheel ~ I love trimming the bottoms of pieces (like using a lathe!) ~ I love playing with glaze recipes (all safe for food, microwave dishwasher and oven) to get the right color and surface ~ and I love opening a freshly fired kiln to see all the surprises.

For a while this was enough, but alas I took a watercolor batik class and my head was turned.  This medium makes images by applying melted
wax to rice paper (actually mulberry) and then watercolor paint in successive, increasingly darker, layers.  The results are richly colored, intriguing and always a surprise – just like opening the kiln!  At first I felt I was being unfaithful, but now realize that there is room in my life for both of my loves.

I used to make my living as a microbiology technician at the local university, but became interested in clay about 17 years ago and now that I am retired, can devote myself to art full time.  I am very fortunate to have my own studio and spend most of my time there playing, watching the birds and thinking about all the chores I am avoiding.  The only part of doing art that I have found less than wonderful is selling it.  Although I find it disagreeable, if I don’t move these pieces on, I’ll either have to stop producing or my house will explode.

If you are interested in purchasing my clay pieces, please contact me.  The pieces are in flux and so pictured work is not always available.  If want to buy the batik giclee prints, they can be ordered online.  Some of the originals can also be purchased by contacting me.  If you are in the neighborhood, stop by and I’ll give you a studio tour.
